Visiting a Tea Factory
No highland tour is complete without stepping inside a working tea estate. The process from leaf to cup is a fascinating industrial poetry — withering racks, rolling drums, fermentation rooms heavy with earthy fragrance, and the final firing that locks in flavour.
Most estates welcome visitors. The Dambatenne Tea Factory near Haputale, founded in 1890 by Sir Thomas Lipton himself, is among the most atmospheric. Lipton's Seat viewpoint nearby offers a staggering panorama across valley after valley of tea, best experienced at sunrise before the mist burns off.
Best Tea Experiences by Elevation
At 1,800 metres, Nuwara Eliya produces the lightest, most delicate teas — often called Ceylon's Champagne. At mid-elevations around Ella and Haputale, the teas grow fuller and more complex. Lower country estates near Ratnapura produce bold, strong brews perfect for milk tea.
The Nine Arch Bridge
Near Ella, the famous Nine Arch Bridge is perhaps the most photographed railway viaduct in Asia. Built entirely from brick and stone — no steel — by colonial engineers in 1921, it sits in a hollow surrounded by tea terraces and jungle.
