Sigiriya — Sri Lanka's Lion Rock — is arguably the most dramatic ancient site in all of Asia. Rising 200 metres above the surrounding jungle, this 5th-century rock fortress was once the royal palace of King Kashyapa, and today it stands as Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark.
Getting There

The Best Time to Climb

The dry season (December to April) offers the clearest skies, but Sigiriya is stunning year-round. Even in the wet season, morning visits usually escape the afternoon showers.
What to Expect on the Climb
The ascent takes approximately 90 minutes at a leisurely pace. The route passes through landscaped water gardens at the base, then spirals up iron staircases bolted to the sheer rock face. Halfway up, a sheltered gallery houses the famous Sigiriya frescoes — vivid 5th-century paintings of celestial maidens, remarkably preserved after 1,500 years.
Near the summit, the Lion Paws terrace offers your first glimpse of the colossal lion's feet carved directly into the rock. From the top, a 360-degree panorama of jungle, reservoirs, and distant mountains makes every step of the climb worthwhile.
What to Bring
Pack light. A small backpack with water (at least 1.5 litres), sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable closed-toe shoes is all you need. Sandals are manageable but trail shoes are better on the steep sections.
